Funding Education Sign

On Monday, June 27, 2016, Consumer Health Coalition participated in the PA Budget Statewide Day of Action by organizing a rally at Freedom Corner in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Many people gathered and voiced support for increased revenue that will support human services and education, which are vital to many people.

The crowd chanted the slogan “Real People with Real Issues deserve Real Revenue.”

Speakers at the rally included rally organizer Sally Jo Snyder from Consumer Health Coalition, Sarah Byrne-Houser of Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children, Helen Gerhardt of Just Harvest, and Milton Henderson of TRCIL Services, Inc.

As the budget deadline draws near on June 30, CHC is encouraging everyone to continue calling their legislators to voice support for revenue that supports our essential human services and education needs.

CHC Letter to the Editor: Raising tobacco tax is good health and fiscal policy

June 13, 2016   Comments Off on CHC Letter to the Editor: Raising tobacco tax is good health and fiscal policy

CHC’s intern, Arthi Narayanan, wrote a Letter to the Editor for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette making the case for increasing tobacco taxes to raise revenue for PA’s 2016-2017 state budget in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Letter to the Editor.

She writes, “With the commonwealth currently experiencing a structural deficit of $1.8 billion, we need to focus on raising revenue for the 2016-17 budget. We cannot keep making cuts to expenditures, as these cuts have been hitting education and human services resources strongly.

One of the most effective ways to raise revenue, both from a financial perspective and a health care perspective, is to tax tobacco products such as cigars and smokeless tobacco.”
