Consumer Health Coalition recently received an award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery Initiative (SOAR). This award allows CHC the opportunity to expand our work within the Allegheny County Jail to assist inmates who are being released and are at risk of homelessness to apply for SSI/SSDI benefits if they are disabled.
The project brings together a strong cohort of leaders from the Allegheny County Jail, the Criminal Justice System, Behavioral Health Providers, Allegheny County DHS, and many others to execute an action plan to implement the project. The group held their first formal meeting in July.
The above picture shows our Director of Consumer Navigation, Leslie Bachurski, in Portland, Maine with other grantees from across the United States at the SOAR Leadership Academy. Leslie spent three days working with local state leads and the Technical Assistance team learning about the SOAR process, successful implementation, and how to support our two SOAR counselors at the Allegheny County Jail: Anitra Lyles and Shedaya Guy.
