Health Care Access

Ensuring that every man, woman, and child has access to quality, affordable health care.

June 2008 - Cover America TourEvery American deserves to have access to quality, affordable health care. CHC works to advance reforms that reduce the number of people without health insurance coverage and control rising health care costs. We specifically target populations that are at-risk for experiencing barriers to good health and health care including people with low incomes, the uninsured and underinsured, people from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds, and people with all types of disabilities.

Please join us to advance health care justice!

CHC empowers Pennsylvanians to ensure that everyone receives the quality health care they deserve. We collect stories of people’s experiences with the health care system to help us all understand what it means to encounter barriers to care and to put a ‘human face’ on this complex issue. We also organize local coalitions of consumers and health advocates to enhance our collective chances of achieving meaningful change. Finally, CHC hosts public events such as press conferences, community forums, and ‘speak outs’ to raise public awareness about the need to fix our broken health care system.

Everyone can make a difference in achieving health care for all!

Did you know?

  • One in four Pennsylvanians did not have health insurance for some period of time during 2007 and 2008 (Families USA, 2009)
  • More and more people are struggling to afford their health insurance premiums. From 2000 to 2007, family health insurance premiums rose 6.4 times faster than earnings in Pennsylvania (Families USA, 2008).
  • People that have a chronic disease or disability are often priced out of health coverage or denied all together because of their condition. It doesn’t seem fair that people who need health services the most – people who are sick – cannot get the care they need.
  • Many of us may be just one illness away from losing our jobs – and our employer-based insurance – and joining the ranks of the uninsured ourselves. Sadly, illness and medical bills are the number one cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. (Health Affairs, 2005).

Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN)

As a founding member of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network (PHAN), CHC is working with organizations across the state to make sure that every Pennsylvanian will have access to quality, affordable health care.

The work of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network is guided by a set of principles that we believe the future of our health care system should adhere to:

  • Access to quality health care for every Pennsylvanian
  • Affordable, quality health insurance for all Pennsylvanians
  • Effective controls to help contain rising health care costs
  • A shared responsibility for health system costs
