I believe that films are our 21st Century story-tellers!

Viewing and discussing a movie builds community, fosters insight, and is a good time!

In January 2010 we launched Sal’s Cinema Society!  We meet at 4:00 pm the last Monday of every  month at South Side Cinemas.  ALL ARE WELCOME!

“It’s Complicated”

3 Seals.

Movie stars: Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep.

Summary:  Baldwin and Streep play a recently divorced middle-aged couple with grown children who begin pursuing the possibility of getting back together after a drunken tryst while attending their son’s college graduation.

Commentary:  As always, Meryl Streep is amazing with a range that would make Ozzie Smith (baseball reference… look it up) jealous. Streep is believable as a successful, mature woman who actively flirts with the idea of getting back together with her cheating ex-husband and then, believably so, comes to her senses.  Alec Baldwin is entertaining as the husband and offers much of the film’s humor.  Also,  give Alec credit for being a paunchy, 50-something not afraid to show his belly….substantial as it may be.  Steve Martin is good in the serious role as Streep’s possible new suitor.  The soundtrack is quite good with a nice mix.  Rent this one, folks.

REVIEWS

February’s meeting of “SAL’s CINEMA SOCIETY” featured viewing and discussion of the Oscar-nominated film, “An Education.” MV5BMTg4NjgzOTc0MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTc2OTE3Mg@@__V1__SX94_SY140_

Set in 1961 England, the film features an outstanding and incredible performance by Carey Mulligan.  This film newcomer earned every bit of her Best Actress nomination.  Seriously, it’s worth seeing this film simply for her performance.

The movie deals with issues of where and how does one gain an education? What are the important life lessons we learn through experience? What is the WHY behind getting an education? What is gained? What is lost?  These questions are posed and answered through the story of a young and bright 16-year old dealing with the attention and romantic interest of an older man who offers her a life of concerts, trips to Paris, and fine food and wine.

An interesting point in our discussion of the film was viewing it this side of the feminist revolution.   Amazing! In 40 years we have come a long way, baby!
