BOOK CLUB

THE HEALTH COMMITTEE for PERSONS with DISABILITIES BOOK CLUB
In partnership with the Carnegie Library we hold a bi-monthly community book club.

The HCPD Book Club began in August 2016 and our first read and discussion was FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL by Sherri Fink.  The discussion centered on why is it seemingly always the infirm, the impoverished, persons of color and persons with disabilities who are the first to be tossed on the discard pile.

This is a serious book club where the issues and concerns of the times are read and discussed. There is not an easy, light "beach read" among the books being read.  Here are last year's selections:

  • THE HERITAGE: Black Athletes a Divided America and the Politics of Patriotism by Howard Bryant
  • AN AMERICAN SICKNESS: How Healthcare Became Big Business by Elizabeth Rosenthal
  • NO ONE CARES ABOUT CRAZY PEOPLE, by Ron Powers
  • GOOD KINGS, BAD KINGS, by Susan Nussbaum on the topic of institutionalization, abuse and a system fo perpetual dependence for persons with disabilities
  • LEADERSHIP by Doris Kearns Goodwin
  • LOST CHILDREN by Valeria Luiselli and the immigration crisis on the USA border

The HCPD BOOK CLUB is for all and is intersectional.
We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every other month, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Check back here for the latest read and when and how and where we will meet
